Description
This Bourbon vanilla is organically grown in Madagascar. Orchids grow there in tropical forests. Small farmers are engaged in the labor-intensive cultivation of orchids. Orchid flowers are pollinated by hand. A trained hand can pollinate up to 1,200 flowers per day. Within 6-8 months, a green pod grows from each flower. Before ripening, when the color changes from green to yellow, each pod is picked by hand. After months of fermentation and drying, the pods take on a dark brown color.
This 19th century African beauty was named after the island of Réunion, which was then called Île Bourbon. The orchids whose pods we enjoy came from Mexico, where the Aztec rulers already compared the pleasant aroma of vanilla to cocoa in the 14th century.
